Late preterm infant and risks to be taken into consideration

Late preterm infants frequently show a similar size and weight to term newborns and can be treated as healthy children with low risk of morbidity, however this group constitutes 9% of all births and the probability of developing a neonatal medical complication is 4 times higher than that of a term infant. A review of books and 6 pediatric articles from different countries was made, and the bibliography documents a significant increase in morbimortality. All of them concluded that late preterm newborns are physiologically and metabolically immature, presenting complications, the most frequent being respiratory pathologies followed by metabolic problems and hyperbilirubinemia. Despite the published evidence, there is still no firm perception among neonatologists and obstetricians of the impact that late preterm infants have on neonatal morbidity and mortality rates.
